A great start to the week!

We started a new unit in Math this morning. Our new unit is on Measuring Perimeter and Area. After reviewing how to find the perimeter and area of a rectangle, we learned how to find the area of a parallelogram. We read three more chapters of The Giver after the first break. Students are now starting to identify some of the conflicts within the story. We had a great class discussion on death and how it is treated in the community from the novel. For Gym, we did a HIIT workout and footwork exercises with a ladder and hurdles. Mr. Aaron also added some Jiu-Jitsu exercises as well. We started a new unit in Science, where we were introduced to structures. Students worked on the KWL charts about structures and then we had a lesson and great class discussion on "What is a structure?" We have also finished with History for the year. Students were introduced to their new subject, Geography. Today, as a class we discussed "What is Geography?" and "Why is it important?"

Homework:

Math: Finish questions 1-2 on pg. 122-123 in the Math workbook.

Language; Read chapters 17-19. Work on conflicts within the novel. Complete vocab words 1-51.

Science: Finish the KWL chart on Structures. Finish questions on "What is a structure?"

 What a busy and productive day! Today in Math, students watched videos about chequing and savings accounts. We had a great class discussion about provincial and federal taxes and investigated a table that illustrated the percentage of taxes in different provinces and territories. All "MART" Geometry Transformation Assignments are due tomorrow. Please make sure you hand it in. For Language, students continued working on their rough outline for their formal, opinion-based letter. This letter is connected to the Farm Project and is for students to request a loan to build their farm. Some students have finished their rough outline for their letters and are now taking what they wrote and are now putting it into a proper formal letter format. This is due Monday! It was a great start to the week! Who doesn't love Pi? I don't mean the dessert, I mean the mathematical theory of Pi! Students were introduced to this concept today and how regardless of diameter lengths, the circumference of a circle will always be 3.14159265359.... times the measured diameter. We are challenging the students to test this theory on 3 different-sized circles. They need to document their testing via pictures and videos and then create an infographic or slideshow to demonstrate their learning. Students were busy during Language, taking their main points with supporting details and writing them into a proper paragraph. We have been working on our class opinion essay about "Should we have to wear a school uniform?" Tomorrow we will look at putting all our paragraphs together to create the body of our essay.  It was a productive end to our first full week of school! For Math, students practiced how to find the greatest common factor (GCF) of two numbers, as well as, the lowest common multiple (LCM). During Language, students began interviewing their partners for their Classmate Biography assignment.  We had another hilarious time during Gym with our cooperative games and the students trying to solve the HUMAN KNOT! In Science, we explored the relationship between Biotic and Abiotic factors. Finally during French, students spent time researching the topic of choice. Homework: Math: Finish questions 1-5 on pg. 8-9 in the Math workbook. Language: Those who have NOT finished the Letter to Yourself or the comprehension questions for the Milton Hershey biography need to hand it in on Monday.  Students please remember to bring 2-3 pictures of yourself when you were younger for your partner to use on their presentation.
