Happy Halloween! The energy has been high today with students showing off some great costumes! We started our day with completing the finishing touches to both of our spooky door designs for the Monster Door contest. Students were busy adding their grotesque monsters to our classroom door or writing a short story about the monsters. After lunch, we watched the classic monster movie the Creature from the Black Lagoon and then went to the gym to show off our costumes for the Heritage Halloween costume contest. We ended the day hanging with friends at the Halloween dance party. Homework: Math: Finish questions 2-5 on pg. 39-39 in the Math workbook. Language: Finish Plot Graph for the short story All Summer In A Day . History: Work on the Historical Figure assignment. (Due: Wednesday, November 2 ) Science: Work on Shoebox Ecosystem assignment. Halloween is creeping up on our class! Today was a special day to help our class getting ready for both our Day of the Dead and Halloween celebrations. We spent the morning putting together our spooky door designs. Students worked in groups and used their artistic talents to create creepy elements for our door designs. Some students worked on bringing their monsters and other creations to life, while the rest of the students helped to design and create our spooky backgrounds for our classroom door. After lunch the Grade 7's assisted Mrs. H set up and run today's Dia de los Muertos celebrations. To help out, students were broken into groups. Some students helped at the Altar table, where staff and students remember their loved ones who have passed. Other students helped out at the Ofrenda (Offering) table, where bread, fruit, water, and sugar skulls are placed for those who have passed. The students were very focused today! We started the day in Math finishing our questions about rate. For Language, students looked up the meaning to the word MACABRE and had to draw their own version of the definition. Afterwards, students voted on their favourite spooky door design and then broke into groups to start creating our spooky classroom door tomorrow. During History, students spent the period researching their historical figure. We ended the day finishing up any decorations for our Day of the Dead celebration tomorrow. It was a busy Wednesday! For Math this morning students learned that rate is a comparison of two quantities measured in different units. Students then learned how to express different unit rates. During Language, students were introduced to the master of macabre and mystery, Edgar Allan Poe. After watching a brief biography on the writer, we read his famous poem The Raven together as a class and discussed the mood of the poem. For Gym, students learned how to throw and catch a frisbee. They then worked on passing a frisbee to a partner and afterwards towards a target. We got to do our first examination of our Bottle Ecosystem during Science. Students then recorded their observations in their Bottle Ecosystem journal. We ended the day with French, where students played French games like Duolingo. It was another busy Tuesday! This morning during Math we continued to work on the application of ratios, where students used diagrams and tables again to model and solve ratio problems. In Language, students continued in their groups to finish filling out a plot diagram for the story, All Summer In A Day . For Art, students worked on either spooky door design or finished their haunted house sketches for our mixed medium activity. Students received their first research assignment in History. For this assignment, each student has chosen a historical figure and they will be researching why their person was important to the formation of New France or British North America. Students will the do a 1-2 minute presentation on their historical figure. We ended the day with a school fire drill practice and then used our FLEX period to work on any homework. A good start to the week! This morning in Math students explored the application of ratios and learned that you can use diagrams and tables to model and solve ratio problems. We read a new short story during Language called All Summer In A Day , by Ray Bradbury. Students then worked in groups to fill out a plot diagram of the story. During Art, students worked on either spooky door design or their haunted house sketches for our mixed medium haunted house activity. For Science, we continued taking up the answers for the David Attenborough documentary, A Life On Our Planet . We ended the day with a FLEX period, where students worked on any homework. Friday was EPIC! We started the morning finishing up any questions from the Monster Ratios activity. Students then levelled up their characters on Prodigy and tried to solve some new ratio and rate questions in order to defeat the villains on their quest! We walked down to Dow's Lake for the next two periods to work on our Bottle Ecosystem experiment. Students broke into three groups to collect water, soil and plants from around Dow's Lake. We walked back to the school and built three awesome pop bottle ecosystems. After lunch the grade 6,7, and 8's went to the park for our first annual Soccer/baseball tournament! There were a lot of smiles as the different teams played against each other in the warm Autumn sun. In the end, it was the Blue team that won the tournament! Thursday was busy! We started the day doing another Math activity where students were given a recipe for pumpkin loaf and had to change the ratios of the ingredients so that they could make more than one loaf. We spent Language looking how mood is used in the short story The Monkey's Paw . For Gym, we went to the park and played Soccer/Baseball. For Science, we finished off the David Attenborough documentary, A Life On Our Planet . We then took up the comprehension questions based on the documentary. Ended the day with a Flex period, where students either finished up any homework or made decorations for our Day of the Dead celebration. We are halfway through the week! This morning students finished off their Monster Ratios Halloween activity during Math. For Language, we reviewed the elements of a short story and then looked at how mood is created in the short story The Monkey's Paw . Students spent their time in Art working on either a spooky door design for our classroom or started their rough sketches of a haunted house for our mixed medium Haunted House activity. During History we looked at early types of medicine practices and compared them to today's medical practices. Tuesday means today was Monster Club! This morning the students worked on a Halloween activity in Math finding and creating Monster Ratios. We read our second short story in Language, The Monkey's Paw . Afterwards we discussed some elements of the short story, such as characters and setting. For Gym, students reviewed throwing and then played Monster Ball! We watched a David Attenborough documentary in Science called A Life On Our Planet . Students are working on some comprehension questions based on the documentary. Ended the day with French, where students played some Halloween comprehension games. It was a good start to the week! This morning during Math, students learned how to compare ratios by writing each ratio with the same second term and then compare the first terms. Students had to find the lowest common multiple (LCM) to figure out the same second term number. During Language we re-read The Wife's Story and then as a class filled out the plot outline for the story. For this students needed to identify the setting, characters, conflict, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution of the story. We started our new Art activity. This will be a mixed medium activity combining wax crayons with watercolour paints. Students learned composition and have to design a scene with a haunted house. For History we discussed reasons why European explorers and settlers came to North America. Happy Friday! It was a solid end to the week! This morning during Math, students continued working on questions about finding equivalent ratios between two numbers and writing them in their simplest form. We started our new short stories unit in Language. We discussed the elements of a short story and then read The Wife's Story, by Ursula K. Leguin. The students loved the twist at the end of this story! For Gym, students practiced throwing techniques and drills with a partner. During Science, students worked on writing the procedures for our first experiment the self-sustaining bottle ecosystem. We then looked at their first take-home assignment, the Shoe Box Model Ecosystem Project. We ended the day with French, where students were finishing off the final touches for their independent projects to present in class. There were a lot of smiles on this rainy Thursday! This morning we continued with working on our questions about writing different ratios. Students then learned about how to find equivalent ratios by either multiplying or dividing the terms by the same number. Today was the last day of our Biography of a Famous Person slideshow presentations. Students again did a great job giving interesting facts about the life of their famous person. In Art, we finished off our ink (black paint) blot creatures, based on the novel Hide and Seeker . Students then mounted their pictures on black paper, to create a creepy art gallery in the classroom. We had a great class discussion in History about the creation of New France and ended the day making more art and decorations for our Day of the Dead celebration. Another productive Wednesday! This morning in Math, students learned what is a ratio? We then learned how to write different ratios using first and second terms. We continued our presentations for our Biography of a Famous Person slideshows. Students presented on some very interesting people. Tomorrow will be our last day of presentations. During Gym, students learned how to properly dribble and trap a soccer ball. In Science we finished off our cycles of matter questions while working in groups. We are working towards starting our Bottle Ecosystem experiment. We finished the day with a Health discussion on the dangers of social media. It was a chill, but productive day after a pumpkin pie long weekend! We started our second unit in Math on Ratio and Rate. Students worked on the intro to this unit by reviewing their skills on finding either the factors or multiples of different numbers. We finished the class by learning how to convert between different metric units. We started presenting our Biography of a Famous Person slideshows today. Those students who presented today really showed their interest and passion for the individuals that they chose to research. It was a great early end to the week! Picture Day was this morning, so the students spent first period playing Math games. Today was the last day for students to working on their slideshows for their Biography of a Famous Person. Presentations will start next Tuesday, October 11. We went for a run during Gym and then had some free time at the park. During Science, students learned about the different cycles of matter. We ended the day with French, where students are now translating their independent projects into French so they can be presented to the class. It was a beautiful Fall Wednesday! This morning during Math, reviewed the answers from our Math test (Mission Impossible!). After break, students continued to work on their slideshow for their Biography of a Famous Person. Students will begin their presentations on Thursday, October 6. In Art, students continued their ink (black paint) blot creatures, based on the monster from the novel Hide and Seeker to create their own creepy image . Students were adding extra detail to their pictures and writing a short narrative to go with what they created. During History, students began creating their own map of Canada in 1713. A very productive Tuesday! This morning during Math, students answered their first Math test (Mission Impossible!). After break, students continued to work on their slideshow for their Biography of a Famous Person. Students will begin their presentations on Thursday, October 6. We had a Health class today with a great class discussion about gender identity and gender pronouns. During Science, students participated in demonstrating how food webs interact within an ecosystem and then discussed what would happen if a part of the food web was removed. Happy Monday! This morning we marked our second unit review in Math to prepare us for our Mission Impossible (Math Test) tomorrow October 4th. Students are asked to study their review this evening to prepare them. In Language students continued to research and fill out their graphic organizer for their Biography of a Famous Person assignment.
