Did someone say Fun Friday?! We started the day by finishing off building our bridges for the Popsicle Bridge Building contest. After recess, we tested each bridge by seeing if a toy car can drive across it to simulate a dynamic load and then placed a 500 ml bottle of water in the center of the bridge to simulate a static load. You can see the pictures of the bridges below. Now that students have completed their opinion-based essay on The Giver , we spent part of the afternoon watching the movie, to compare it with the book. The students enjoyed the movie, although more than half the class preferred the novel. After a brief discussion about the movie, we spent the rest of the day working on our Invasive Species research assignment for Geography. Homework: Science: Complete Ensuring Structural Safety questions - pg. 28-29 Geography: Complete Vegetation Changes questions. Art: Videos for Change is now due. Health: Exploring Substances presentation is now due.

It was a beautiful day to hang out in the sun! This morning, students learned about finding the surface area of a cylinder. We broke down the formula into different steps and learned why the formula is the way it is. For example, the middle shape in a cylinder is actually a rectangle that wraps around two circles, which are its bases. The length of the rectangle has to be the circumference of the circles, which is also the height of the cylinder. Students have a work package of five questions that are due tomorrow. After Math, we went as a class down to Dow's Lake to check out the Tulip Festival! We had a great time eating snacks and checking out all the beautiful tulips. We ended the day with Geography where we learned about the characteristics of natural vegetation regions. Homework: Math: Surface Area and volume questions of a cylinder. Language: Finish writing the three paragraphs (body) for the essay. The essay is due on May 26. Science: Finish questions on Structural Failure ...

It was a sleepy start to the week, but we got through it! Today students were investigating an area of a circle and why the formula for the area of a circle is the way it is. We learned how we can deconstruct circles into wedges and make an approximate rectangle or into rings and make an approximate triangle. We also learned that of all the different figures it is a circle that takes up the most area even if the circumference/perimeter of all figures is the same! The class then began working on our Daily Challenge with an area of a circle. For Language students learned how to add a quote from The Giver to use as an example for each of their arguments. Students are now working on completing the body of their essays. We will be learning how to write our introduction and concluding paragraphs tomorrow. For Health students finished researching and are now working on the Exploring Substance presentation. As we've been studying factors in climate change for Geography, today students bega...
It was a great end to the week! Today students reviewed the formulas for the circumference of circles and were introduced to the area of a circle formula. We watched a Math Antics video on the circumference and area of a circle, reviewed real-life applications of these formulas and then completed a Google Form Questionnaire. For Language, students continued to find examples from The Giver , to back up their points for their essay. We will be learning how to add quotes to our paragraphs on Monday. For Art, we continued working on symmetry in class. Using grid paper, students were given half of the face of a famous character, person or Pug and had to draw the other half, making it symmetrical to the original side. For Geography, we continued our look at climate changes and learned about both natural climate factors and human-related climate factors. We ended the day with Science, where we continued our exploration of forces that act on bridges. Today we learned about the four most c...
It was a sunny day both inside and outside the classroom! This morning during Math, we worked on our daily circle challenge. Students had to draw different circles based on a given radius, diameter and circumference. For Language students spent the period going through the novel The Giver  and finding examples to support the main points of their essay. Afterwards, for Health, students spent sometime working with their partner researching their substance for their presentations. We continued to look at different climate regions in the world for Geography and ended the day with Science, learning about different forces that act on bridges.  Homework: Math: Circle slideshow is due Geography: Climate Regions Art: Edit Videos for Change
We were pretty focused for a Wednesday! This morning during Math, students continued to finish the final touches for their presentations on the theory of Pi and the circumference of a circle. For Language, we worked together as a class to come up with some more main points for the three essay topics. Students came up with some great ideas and points on the topics of personal choice, pain and memories. Tomorrow we will work on finding supporting details from the novel to back up our main points. We continued with our exploration of Mandalas in Art. Students are now using what they learned about symmetric patterns and are using it to create their own Mandalas. To tie in with our Art lesson, for Science we continued looking at how symmetry is used when designing structures. We ended the day with Geography, where we explored different types of climate and climate regions. Homework: Math: Circle Slideshow is due. Language: Work on essay points and supporting details. Science: Complete symme...
Today was a productive work day! After being introduced to the concept of Pi, students spent the morning working on testing the concept that no matter how large the diameter of a circle is, the circumference will always be 3.14 times the measured diameter. Students finished testing this theory and worked on creating their infographic and slideshow. For Language, students were given their essay topics based on the novel The Giver . Today we picked our topics, created our argument (thesis) and worked on our main points. Tomorrow we will work on finding supporting details from the novel to back up our main points. Afterwards, for Health, students were given their research assignment of exploring substances. Today students picked their topics and began researching for their presentation on that substance. For Geography, we continued working on the Changes to Water Cycles assignment. Students worked in their groups researching and answering questions about their topic. We ended the day with...

It was a great start to the week! Who doesn't love Pi? I don't mean the dessert, I mean the mathematical theory of Pi! Students were introduced to this concept today and how regardless of diameter lengths, the circumference of a circle will always be 3.14159265359.... times the measured diameter. We are challenging the students to test this theory on 3 different-sized circles. They need to document their testing via pictures and videos and then create an infographic or slideshow to demonstrate their learning. Students were busy during Language, taking their main points with supporting details and writing them into a proper paragraph. We have been working on our class opinion essay about "Should we have to wear a school uniform?" Tomorrow we will look at putting all our paragraphs together to create the body of our essay. Inspired by P's awesome Math class on circles, for Art we have decided to explore Mandala's, focusing on symmetry with the designs. We ended ...
The sunshine made for a great end of the week! We had a fun morning during Math, where we figured out some matchstick challenges and then played some math games or work on Mathletics and Prodigy. For Language, we continued in our groups working on our class essay on the topic of "Should we wear uniforms at school?" Today, students started to take their main points and supporting details and are now writing them into proper paragraphs. We went to the park for Gym and enjoyed the sunshine while playing some soccer. After lunch, we worked on Geography, where students worked in pairs researching natural and human changes to water systems.  Homework: Geography: The Landform Assignment and Water System questions are now due. It was a good day of learning! Today we completed our "Circles 3 Ways" challenge. We are proud of the students for figuring out all 14 ways that 3 circles intersect or overlap while paying attention to dilation and translations. We were fascinated to discover that 4 circles can overlap or intersect 173 times and 5 circles intersect 16, 951 times! The number for 6 circles is still unknown.... we finished class learning about diameter, radius and circumference. For Language, we continued as a class to create an essay on the topic of "Should we wear uniforms at school?" Today, students worked in groups to create reasons to support their arguments on whether or not we should wear school uniforms. Tomorrow we will learn how to take our ideas and write them in paragraph form. After lunch, we learned in Geography how only 2.5% of the Earth's water is freshwater. We then looked at both natural and human factors that can affect our water systems. For Science, we learned ...

Another soggy school day! Today students began exploring circles. We learned about the history of circles in math and astronomy and how a circle is considered the "most perfect" shape because of its symmetry. To create a perfect circle or arc you need to have a point in the center and a consistent radius. Students learned a hack to create the perfect circle.... not a compass.... but a paper clip! We are currently working on a challenge to find all the possible ways that three circles can overlap or intersect following 3 rules: the circles can't kiss, they have the same point of intersection, or be outside of the plane (paper). Check out the pictures below of what we have found so far! The grade 6 class joined us today for our Language class on persuasive writing. As a class, we started by brainstorming some opinion-based questions like, "Should we have a class pet?" Afterwards, both the grade 6 and 7 students worked together in groups to create reasons to back t...

The only way to describe today would be fun! Today was our last day exploring triangles -- students had fun creating different triangles, learning the angle rule that all 3 angles will equal 180 degrees and that the area of a triangle theory that we were testing is the same as the original equation. Tomorrow, we will begin investigating circles! During Language, students continued our introduction to persuasive writing. As a class, we are creating an essay on the topic of "Should we wear uniforms at school?" We determined what the main topics of our essay will be, then the class was divided into who is for and against uniforms. Who will win the battle of the best... persuasive... essay...!! After our essay lesson, students got into their groups and continued working on editing their videos for our Videos For Change project. All videos are to be submitted no later than Friday, May 26th to be entered into our school competition. We are strongly encouraging students to spend tim...

It was a bit of a soggy Monday! Students continued exploring the area of a triangle by testing “Jack’s Theory”. We are seeing if this theory works with other types of triangles, so students learned how to use a protractor to create an Obtuse Triangle at a 115-degree angle. They measured the base and height and then tried different area equations to see if they worked. We will be drawing more triangles tomorrow to also test the theory! For Language, we discussed more conflicts found in The Giver and then started our introduction to essay writing. Since students are writing a persuasive essay, we looked at how an essay is an argument. As a class, they were given the question, do you think students should have to wear a school uniform? In groups, students had to come up with three reasons why they thought we should or shouldn't have to wear a school uniform. We then took up our reasons as a class. Afterwards, for our Health class, we started our introduction to substance use. Today we...
